Stand Up for Mental Health

Update 11 Dec 2013: I’ve withdrawn my support of Healthy Place after they RTed this ridiculous bit of fat-shaming on Twitter. They never did respond to my complaint. Really, they should know better.

I’ve added a new widget over there on the right for the “Stand Up” campaign to end the stigma against mental illness. As I’ve mentioned before on the blog, I have generalized anxiety disorder which can impact my relationships and my self-esteem. Instead of ignoring it, I finally had to face it and go into therapy a couple of years ago. Something like 1 in 4 adults in America are dealing with mental health issues at any given time. Let’s take care of our brains and each other without passing judgement, shall we?

If you haven’t already seen this lovely TED Talk by Ruby Wax on the subject, take a few minutes to do so:

UPDATED (2/13) to include link to info about GAD.

Just found this site and wanted to say thank you *so much* for mentioning your anxiety – as an astro grad student with cyclothymia I feel like some days I’m seriously pursuing the wrong profession. I love what I’m doing and it scares me to think my off-kilter chemistry could get in the way of it. Hearing that someone else has not only succeeded in this field with a similar condition, but is currently thriving gives me so much hope for the future! Much appreciated! 🙂
