One Astronomer's Noise

Podcast-y goodness

July 14, 2008 · 5 Comments

Happily, I have gotten over my “podcast-block” where I couldn’t listen to one and do anything else, especially work. I still can’t read a paper and listen, but most of my other tasks I can do while listening along. So I’ve finished Skepticality, working backwards mostly because I was initially interested in the recent topics, and kept going backwards. The newest one features one of the coolest astronomers in the world, Neil Tyson. Overall, I learned a lot of cool stuff from the shows and was entertained. I can’t wait for the next episode!

Now I’ve moved on to Astronomy Cast. I’m starting this one from the beginning and working my way up (minus the few I’ve already tuned into, like the awesome scientific method episode.) It’s all astronomy, all the time. Most of this material I’ve learned in my classes, and I’m even reviewing in my tutoring sessions. Fraser’s question and Pamela’s answers are still very informative to me, and will help solidify my knowledge and help my own explanations to others.

Don’t get me wrong. I still love my music collection. But I’m more entertained when I’m also learning! I feel like I’m finally entering the 21st century. This is all the good stuff I missed while I was immersed in classes 24/7…

Tyson is just so much fun, isn’t he? I attended one of his lectures at the Northeast Astronomy Forum a few years ago, and he was hilarious.

I just caught him on Nova’s ScienceNOW, and am saving the episode for my kids – his presentation does a nice job of educating the layman while holding their interest.

He is! I also recommend his memoirs, I think it’s called “The Sky is Not the Limit.”

Thanks for the review. our episodes come out on Tuesday nights every 2 weeks. But, we have a lot of content to rip through from TAM, so you might get some bonus stuff on the way.

Tyson was AMAZING in person. So, he is THAT guy you see on TV, it isn’t an act. :)

Awesome! I met him briefly once, but I was a shy little undergrad at my first conference so I didn’t get past “hi” and he was entertaining a crowd with his humor.

In other news… OMG Derek from Skepticality just commented on my blog! *nerd fangirl moment* Great t-shirt.

Hey, he probably just filters through Google for mentions for Skepticality. I’m not bursting the bubble here. It’s still cool; lots of people don’t.

Anyway, I need to talk to you about podcasts. I’m sure I’ve got some good recommendations for a fellow libertarian skeptic. I had to declare somewhat of an RSS bankruptcy a while back, because I had more content than I could possibly listen to or view.
