One Astronomer's Noise

Just a wee bit proud of New York

May 30, 2008 · 2 Comments

My friend and fellow ex-New Yorker sent along this good bit of news about New York State’s decision to recognize same-sex marriages that are performed elsewhere.

The move does not legalize same-sex marriage in New York, but it means many bureaucratic restrictions experienced by gay couples will be lifted.

These include issues concerning family health care plans, property inheritance, tax breaks and adoption rights.

Bush better call an emergency to contain this situation… “Code Rainbow!” (It’s funnier when Lewis Black says it.)

This is just a few steps away from actually legalizing marriage in the state. Some states still ban same-sex marriages, others allow some form of domestic partnership. The relegation of same-sex unions to domestic partnerships that are “similar in every way but name” to marriage remind me of the “separate but equal” policy that clearly didn’t serve our country so well in the past. Might we learn from our mistakes this time? Or does that rationality really elude too many people?

New York is just steps away from gay marriage. The whole deal is all so crazy. Marriage is a basic civil right that should be attainable by all Americans if they choose. For those who are uncomfortable with gay marriage check out our short produced to educate & defuse the controversy. It has a way of opening closed minds & provides some sanity on the issue: http://www.OUTTAKEonline.com

Very nice at first, but the trailer starts out with a woman saying that “straight people threaten the institution of marriage, not gay people.” Although there are certainly some good examples of how marriage has been trashed by straight couples, that is not to say that people make bad decisions only if they are straight. Watch out for those all-encompassing statements!

Other than that woman’s start, it’s a great video. Do check it out! :-)
